The
Artist -- Ice Occasions of Las Vegas (Ice Vegas)
Ryan McDougall launched
Ice Vegas in 1997, creating ice sculptures and carvings for the
glamorous Las Vegas market. He and his award winning team of ice
sculptors have been delivering show stopping creations for hotels,
casinos and the movie industry using the tools of modern ice sculptors:
picks, chisels, chainsaws … In 1999, Ice Vegas added a Precix CNC
router to the mix. "We wanted to be able to mass produce small pieces
and do more accurate logo work. A CNC router was the answer."
His work
Ryan
and his Ice Vegas team create sculptures for special events, awards,
dinners and private functions. Many clients want their logos in
the creation, so accuracy is important in their work. Typical creations
include custom sculptures, table centerpieces, ice bars and liquor
displays. Ice Vegas art work has been displayed not only in Las
Vegas, but all over North America. Their biggest piece so far is
a 12' x 9' ice wall for the premier of "Die Another Day" (below).
The most challenging order: two thousand miniature baby grand pianos
.
His tools
Ryan and his team use a Precix Industrial
Series 9100 CNC router in 25°F (-5°C) freezer. Why did Ice Vegas
choose Precix? According to Ryan: "I knew my application
wasn't really normal. At a trade show, I told CNC router reps: 'I
want to put your machine in a freezer and cut ice all day. What
do you think?' Precix was the only router manufacturer who did not
hum and hah." For Ryan, his Precix 5100 router fits the bill: "It
was the right price, good quality for what I wanted to do and they
offer good support."
Cool.
